It seemed that Jing Yuan chose Charlie out of a belief that she wouldn't fight back, whereas Hawke chose Adolphe out of a belief that he would be a decent match. Maybe it has something to do with their personalities, or how they're affected. Jing Yuan was apathetic and lazy, whereas Hawke seemed to have been suffering from overconfidence.
