Wait, you don't know? So even if you get this whole "redemption" thing and get to go back, you might have to die all over again? But that isn't fair.

I... don't know. I have no idea how I died in the first place.

No. The last thing I remember is going to bed. It was just a normal day.

Nothing. But it sounds like I might be an exception... Everyone else I've talked to had something in mind. I'm not sure what makes me so different.

There wasn’t anything that I know of. The Tower’s usually pretty safe, and even the one time someone broke in, they had a whole lockdown to deal with it. There was nothing like that before I woke up here.

What happened?

[ winces. ]

I've seen some harsh punishments in the Tower, but nothing like that. This Nightsong thing must be pretty bad to go that far.

That's your boss...? Shar?

[ "as old as the dark itself" is a little beyond his comprehension right now. ]

There's no way you could fix it even if you did get a chance to go back?

Ohhh. I'm still getting used to the idea of gods or goddesses being able to communicate with people...

[ let alone punish them so directly. ]

Then there’s still a chance to make up for it. [ laurence isn’t usually an optimist, but even a small chance is better than imminent death. ] I hope she does forgive you when you get back.
